Study of 1 Timothy, Chapter 5 Caring For Widows, Elders, and Slaves

caring

As a Christian, we are commanded by God to care for our widows, elders, and those who are oppressed.  Do we faithfully follow this command?  Or are we guilty of turning our heads away, thinking that someone else will take care of that person?  Do we consciously make an effort to check the way that we speak to another?  It is with love, kindness, respect, and caring?  Or, do we take out our emotions in our words?

5 1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; 2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;

2 The elder women as mother; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

We should never speak harshly, or be disrespectful, to an elderly man but should treat him with the same respect as we would our own father.  Younger men should be treated as though he were our brother.  An elderly woman should be treated as though she was our mother, and we should treat younger women as we would treat our own sisters.  The word purity in the Old Testament relates more to ritual purity, i.e. cleanliness, or emptying out.  In the New Testament, purity is associated more with moral purity, or purification.  Paul is encouraging Timothy to treat all others with love as he would his own family, and to that this behavior should reflect in his lifestyle, setting an example for others.

Paul addressing the church in terms of family shows that although there may be times of discipline, all must be done in a respectful and loving manner.  We should never take our church family for granted and always treat them as though we would treat our own family members.

3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.

4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite [repay] their parents:  for that is good and acceptable before God.

As a church family, we are responsible for caring for widows that have no one else to care for them, but for widows who have family members alive and well, it should become their first responsibility to take care of their parent(s) at home.  This action by children of a widow pleases God.  For anyone who has taken care of an elderly parent, you are aware that it is not always easy and is most times challenging.  But, when you keep in mind all that our parents have done for us since the time we were born, why would we not want to return that love and affection in a time that they are not able to care for themselves?

The word used in verse 3 by Paul to signify material and financial support is honour.  There are requirements for widows to meet in order to be qualified for care by the church.  Firstly, she must have no family available to care for her.  Secondly, she must be strong in her faith.  Lastly, she must be at least 60 years of age (v. 9).  If there are children of a widow, they should assume the responsibility of care to prevent the church of being financially burdened, therefore in the chain of care, there family comes first before the church.  Even with the availability of Social Security, IRA’s, etc. for our elderly, simple care may be lacking and daily needs not met.  It becomes difficult for our elderly parent(s) to provide and support themselves without additional help.

Paul defines a true widow as a woman who is truly alone in this world with no one to care for her, a woman who has placed her hope in God, and one who prays night and day to God for her support and the support of the church’s ministry, and a woman who continues to live out her faith during her days on this earth.  But, a widow who lives only for pleasure and self-gratification is spiritually dead.  This is the widow who is concerned with living in luxury and gives no concern to her spiritual growth in Christ.

As a church, we should support those among us who have no family.  But, we shouldn’t limit ourselves to just widows.  We should also be seeking ways to help the elderly, young, handicapped, homeless, jobless, those with illness or disease, and those with emotional and spiritual needs.  Even family members who care for their elderly parents/grandparents are in need of assistance from others.  Offering to relieve those who care for others for even a couple of hours will be greatly appreciated.  A simple phone call to a caregiver just to let them know you are there to help can make such a difference.  When we begin to give freely of ourselves, others will do the same, and from this we create a circle of love and caring.

Paul wanted to ensure that the church would comply with the instruction of family taking care of widows so no one would be open to criticism.  He continues on to say that those who do not care for the elderly within their own family are worse in God’s eyes than a non-believer.  Those who refuse to care for their elderly has denied Christianity.

The family unit and relationships within a family is very important to God.  Paul’s strong language in verse 8 suggests that taking care of our own family is a spiritual responsibility.  We must not neglect our widows within our family.

A widow would be classified as a woman of at least 60 years old and one who had been married and faithful to her husband.  She is a deeply respected woman who has done good works, she has raised her children in the faith of God, she has been kind to strangers and is humbled, she has been of great help to others in need, and has always been ready and willing to do the work of God.

One may think it odd that a widow of a younger age is excluded from Paul’s description, but he had his reasons which we shall see in the next verses.

14 I will [desire] therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide [manage] the house, give none occasion [no opportunity] to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.

16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve [help] them, and let not the church be charged [burdened]; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.

Younger widows should not be included for several reasons.  Firstly, a the physical desires of a younger widow may overpower their devotion to Christ, leading them to remarry.  Wax wanton means that a younger widow rebels against Christ and remarry outside of His will, marrying someone that God disapproves of.  In doing this, she has opened herself up for condemnation from others because she no longer respects her pledge to obey God.  She will become lazy, begin to gossip about others and become a busybody, talking about things that aren’t their business and they have no right talking about.  Paul advised these young widows to remarry within their faith, bear and raise their children, wherein there would be no reason for anyone to speak out against them.  But, Paul feared that some of the younger widows had gone astray from their faith to follow the ways of Satan.

Paul encouraged family to care for their widows to remove the burden on the church.  If we are capable of caring for our widows, then we must certainly do so in order for the church to be able to care for those widows who are truly alone.

Marrying within their faith was the purposed plan for younger widows, but many had already rebelled against God and became self-indulgent, prideful, and seeking worldly materials.  We must encourage our younger widows to remain strong in their faith.  It is not an easy thing to lose your husband, regardless of what age you may be.

Does your church provide a service to the members who are widowed?  Is your church recognizing the needs and encouraging the care of the widows within your church walls?

We are truly blessed with those who have been called into the ministry and dedicate their life to the Work of God. Paul is recognizing that those who fulfill the will of God and preach and teach are worthy of double honour, meaning that they should be respected for the office that they hold and be compensated financially.  Sometimes, we fail to realize that when a preacher/teacher spends their time preparing for delivery of the Word to us, they are not receiving a ‘pay check’ as we do going to work each day.  Many Pastors/Preachers receive little to no compensation for the devotion to God, but yet they have the same expenses that you and I have.

It is important, as members of a congregation, that we provide for our Pastor/Preacher.  He is a man of God that God has provided for our teaching and refining.  Imagine what our life would be like if we had no one to share the Gospel with us each week.  Belonging to a church that is based on the scripture of the Bible and is spirit-filled is a true blessing.  God knows how our churches are in this day and age.  Many are providing feel-good sermons to increase their numbers of members, while others are twisting scripture to meet the same means.  If you are one who has found a church in your area that is not guilty of this and continues to teach the Bible as it is written, then you are a blessed soul.  We should never take for granted a church that remains strict in its teachings.  Apostasy is surrounding this world in a mighty way.  Appreciate your Pastor/Preacher and let him know that you are grateful to have him at your church and help in any way that you can to provide his security.

Those who are working for Christ are worthy of their reward.  Many times, someone will make an accusation against a church leader, and most times it is geared because of wrong reasons.  Some members may feel that their expectations are not being met, or they may feel that their leader is not performing as he should.  Still others may just have a personality conflict with their leader of the church wherein they begin to say things negative about the leader.  Paul is saying that no accusation should be brought against a leader/elder, or even heard unless there are two to three other witnesses to confirm the accusation.

When a church leader/elder is addressed for his behavior, all should be done in love and with intention of restoration.  We must never accuse a leader/elder out of our own selfish reasons.  This only brings division into a congregation and is the work of Satan.

22 Lay hands suddenly [hastily] on no man, neither be partaker [share in] of other men’s sins:  keep thyself pure.

23 Drink no longer [do not drink only] water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities [frequent illnesses].

24 Some men’s sins are open beforehand [clearly evident], going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.

25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand [clearly evident]1; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.

Paul is instructing Timothy that those who sin should be reprimanded in front of the whole church, without favoritism, which will stand as a strong warning to others.  We should be careful in the selection of our church leaders, as well as keeping our pure heart in awareness and avoiding participating in other’s sinful nature.

The purpose of Paul instructing Timothy in regards to only drinking water is unclear.  It is speculated that possibly Timothy had issues with stomach problems and other illnesses and was encouraged to include wine for the ease of digestion.  It is also noted that some believed that Timothy may have had the occurrence of drinking contaminated water and therefore Paul was advising him to drink wine to ease his discomfort.  By no means is this verse to be taken as an encouraging statement for alcoholism, but as used in moderation for the cure of ailments.

Paul goes on to point out that although sin may be obvious and clearly evident leading to judgment, others sin may remain in secret but will be revealed at some point in time.  Just as good deeds seen in some are obvious to others, and some good deeds remain done in secret until one day they will come to light.  This also lends back to the point Paul made regarding the selection of our church leaders.  Godly men who confess and openly declare the sin in their life stand in judgment by God.  But those who try to hide their sin will find, that eventually, it will catch up to them  in the end.  We cannot hide anything from God.  He knows our heart and our mind.  Those who seek a leadership position within a church should present with a pure heart and a clear conscious.
