Study of 1 Timothy Chapter 4 Warning Against False Teachers

 false teachers

In the Bible, we see warning after warning regarding the appearance of false teachers among us.  As we draw nearer to the end of times, we are told that they will present in greater numbers and in great strength.  God repeats this warning for a reason…He wants us to be aware and to stay on our toes, especially when it comes to what we hear and see.  He doesn’t want us to be misled, or led astray by these false teachers.  As Christians, we must be careful to validate the accuracy of any teaching against scripture.  The challenge of identifying false teachers becomes easier for us as we continue to read and study God’s Word.

1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

In 1 Timothy Chapter 1, Paul briefly touched on the warning of false teachers.  Here we see Paul go into more detail, warning Timothy of the threat that they face in Ephesus.  False teachers are not something new in our generation. They have been around since the beginning of time, but now, we have the written Word to teach us what we should look for.  False teachers are a huge threat to the church because they are very good at what they say and do, and many who are weak in their faith will listen and believe these teachers.

Paul informs Timothy that he will see apostasysome shall depart from the faith.  Apostasy means to deliberately and permanently reject Christ after having professed your belief in Him; forsaking your faith.  In other books of the Bible, Paul denotes that we will see apostasy come first [2 Thessalonians 2:32 Thessalonians 2:3

 The issues that Timothy faced in Ephesus centered around Greek philosophers who believed that the body was evil and only the soul mattered.  These teachers did not believe that our God who created all was good.  This belief was based on Jesus and His time spent on this earth.  They believed that this would have defiled Jesus, and therefore they could not believe he was truly human during this time.  This belief being spread among believers could have significantly changed the Christian church and its direction.

The biggest challenge we face when discerning a false teacher is that they are so good at what they do.  They appear to be godly in their words and acts, and they say that they are speaking for God.  But, no matter who they are, if anything that they say contradicts the Bible in even the smallest way, they are a false teacher!  Not every false teacher is direct in their teaching, allowing us to immediately determine we should turn away from them.  Some are very subtle in their teachings, twisting only one word of scripture here and there, or diluting the scripture so that it fits a particular lifestyle in general.  This is when we, as Christians, must be knowledgeable in the Word.  If we don’t know what the Bible says, then how can we know when someone is teaching false doctrine?

 These teacher’s conscience was scarred for life.  They were hypocrites, teaching false doctrine, fully knowing their wrong and continuing to do so.  By preaching that people should not marry and abstain from certain foods, they were making themselves look righteous.  This doctrine, of course, was not true.  We know from scripture that God gave guidelines for those who want to marry, and we know that God created foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who are aware of the truth of the Word.

 Anyone who teaches anything that contradicts God’s Word is not of God, but of Satan.  Satan is a very strong opponent and we should never underestimate his power, or his desire to overcome us.  Any one of us, as Christians, that believe that we can take on Satan without the whole armour of God is terribly misled.  We cannot do anything on our own without Jesus by our side [John 5:30John 5:30

 Everything that God has created is good, so we should not refuse any of it but instead, receive it with thanks.  All of God’s creation has been made acceptable by the word of God and through prayer.  Paul instructs Timothy in his faith of good doctrine and that if Timothy continues to share the message of Jesus Christ with his brethren, he will continue to be a worthy servant of Jesus Christ.  When we share and teach others the word of God, we instruct ourselves as well.

 Too many times, we find ourselves arguing over petty things, irrelevant ideas and man-made traditions, instead of focusing on living a godly life.  In today’s society, too much emphasis is placed on physical health, disregarding our spiritual health, when it should actually be reversed.  Paul advises Timothy to stay away from ‘profane’ and ‘old wives fables’ because they are false doctrine, which leads one to live an ungodly life.  False doctrine impedes our spiritual growth.  How do we live a godly life?  Well, it begins with having a relationship with God, which begins when we accept Jesus Christ as our LORD and Saviour.  Our belief, faith, and trust is strengthened by reading and studying the Word of God.  We communicate with God, and He with us, through prayer.  As we grow in our faith, our relationship with God becomes stronger.  We should nurture our relationship with God through His Word.  We must protect our immediate family and church family from threat of sin by learning the Word together, in close fellowship.  And lastly, we must make every effort to resist the temptation of sin by avoiding situations that we recognize are not good for us.  Warning signs will be evident when situations we face present with temptations and we must learn to be aware of these signs.  Satan is a strong adversary and he will never miss an opportunity to lead you astray.  He attacks you at your weakest and strongest moments in life, but you are never alone in Jesus Christ.  We must always remember 1 Corinthians 10:131 Corinthians 10:13
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

 It amazes me that people are not overly concerned about their spirituality.  Throughout the Bible, we are told that many will turn away from the truth and that basically, people will look for the easy way out.  They will seek teachers that tell them what they want to hear to justify their ungodly life.  As Christians, a healthy spiritual body does not come automatically to us.  It is something that we have to work at, continuously paying attention to.  We must learn to test the spirits and discern all we are taught.  We must pray for the wisdom and understanding that is needed for our spiritual strength.  If we consider our physical bodies and realize that it does not get stronger without exercise, then why would we expect our spiritual body to gain strength if we never apply exercise to it?

12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

 In everything we do, we should be setting an example for others.  Before you were a Christian, did you ever see others and think to yourself “I want what they have?”  I remember that thought going through my head many times before I accepted Jesus as my LORD and Saviour.  It seemed that no matter what was going on in their life, they were thankful.  They were always rejoicing, whether they were happy or saddened.  They had a glow about them that I longed for.  I wanted to be near them to experience the love they had for everyone around them.  I couldn’t understand that even in the worst of times, their faith never faltered, but appeared to gain strength.  Everything they did was with a pure heart and without any selfish desire.  They were at peace and I wanted that in my life as well.  When we live by the Word of God, our actions and words should display the love of Jesus Christ in our life.

 We should never look down upon a godly person because of their age.  Whether they be young or old, they are a child of God and living God’s Word.  Although a younger person may need to earn the respect of their elders, God can still use them just as importantly as one who has been a Christian for a longer period of time.  We must never look at our age as a hindrance to God’s purpose for our life.  We should live so that others can see Christ in us.

 Timothy was advised by Paul that he should never neglect this spiritual gift that he received through prophecy.  He was to read and teach the Scripture and encourage the people of God to obey the truth of the Word that they had learned.  Apparently, Timothy had not been fulfilling these responsibilities.

 Paul was telling Timothy that he needed to give his complete attention to the matter of living a godly life.   Timothy was to throw himself into his tasks to that his progress would be visible by all.  We should be totally absorbed by our life in Christ.  We are a living sacrifice for God and should not deny the gift that He has given us.  Our spiritual growth should be seen by all who cross our path in life.

 We are all given a special gift from God.  Some have more obvious gifts than others, while some may need to seek God’s guidance in recognizing their purpose in God’s plan.  One should not become distraught if their unique gift has not been revealed to them yet.  Not everyone realizes what it is that they should be doing specifically.  Until God reveals your gift, continue to read and study His Word.  Continue to be in prayer.  He is refining you, until He is ready to bring you forth to expand your gift to others.  Know that we are all in this family of Christ, and that we all have a job to do.  Continue to live in a godly fashion, and let God’s love shine through all your words and actions.
