Study of 1 Timothy, Chapter 1 False Teachers

false teachers

In our day and time, it is not uncommon to see false teachers trying to twist the scripture to satisfy ‘itchy ears’, or what people ‘want’ to hear.  But false teachers are not unique to our generation.  They have been in existence for a long time as evidenced by Paul’s letter to Timothy.

Before beginning this study of 1 Timothy, it is interesting to understand the timing of these letters in history, and the similarities and correlation of the two letters written to Timothy and one to Titus.  1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus are referred to as the Pastoral Epistles of the Bible.  There have been many scholars that have questioned whether Paul was the actual author of these books based on the differences in vocabulary and style from the other books of the Bible that Paul had written.  When we take into consideration that the three letters written were done so to Timothy’s co-workers in ministry and that the letters content was addressing issues surrounding church structure and ministry, the differences in writing style and vocabulary can be understood.  These letters were addressed to men who were serving in a pastoral role instead of addressing to the church and its members.

1 Timothy and Titus are believed to have been written by Paul when he was released from house arrest in Rome, approximately A.D. 62-63.  Timothy was in Ephesus dealing with the problem of false teachers [1 Timothy 1:3-41 Timothy 1:3-4

].  2 Timothy was believed to be written during the time that Paul was imprisoned and eventually executed.

In each of the letters, we see that Paul is giving instruction to his co-workers on how to live in faith and to teach others to do the same.  The letters involve issues of false teachers, and how this effects the church.  He stresses the importance of right doctrine in order to live properly.  All three of the letters address church leadership, and although they were not intended to provide a detailed list of church government, they do address significant details on the topic, giving information surrounding bishops and deacons, along with details on the nature of pastoral conduct.

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;

 The definition of the word apostle is one who is sent.  Paul was chosen by Jesus Christ to bring the message of salvation to the Gentiles, and therefore addresses himself as an ‘apostle’.  Although Paul had not been one of the twelve disciples who accompanied Jesus personally, he was dealt with directly by Jesus, which we can see in Acts 9:1-9Acts 9:1-9
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

9 1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, 2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. of this way: Gr. of the way 3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: 4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. 7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. 8 And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.

.  In Acts, we read on to see in 13:2 the Holy Spirit calls Paul (who’s name was Saul at that time) and Barnabas to their missionary work.  This is a significant turning point in the book of Acts. Up until the point that Paul and Barnabas were anointed by the Holy Spirit, the time spent interacting with the Gentiles was hit or miss.  Now, we would see these two called to go out into Gentile territory and preach God’s message.  Wow!  What a blessing they received!

4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith; so do.

 When Paul acknowledges Timothy, he does so as my own son in the faith.  Paul saw Timothy as a true believer and a godly man, in contrast to some people at that time who made claims to be Christians but did not live their life accordingly.  Paul met Timothy in Timothy’s hometown Lystra, a Galatian city.  Paul was on his second journey when he requested Timothy to serve with him in the ministry [Acts 16:1-3Acts 16:1-3

].  As Paul traveled to Macedonia, he had left Timothy in Ephesus in order to deal with false teachers.  Verse 3 and 4 alone allow us to realize that false doctrine has been around for a long time and has been strong enough that it has been accepted and agreed upon by others.

Verse 4 deals less with the identity of the false teachers, but more with what was being said; fables (untruth) and endless genealogies and what effect this was having on the church and church members.

 Many people are easily led astray because they are willing to listen to everything they are told by anyone.  We all know the routine…our days are filled with busywork, leaving little time to read the Bible much less study it.  If we go seeking answers, we tend to find the shortest route, which is usually listening to religious or evangelical TV programs, or searching the internet for articles and information.  It is so much easier to listen and believe what someone else says, then to take the time to read and study on our own, praying for discernment from God in our studies.  Beware!  Satan is a prankster and he is very good at leading your beliefs astray!

Reading verse 5 appears to be in contrast to verses 3 and 4, but it is not.  If we are able to have a genuine faith in Jesus Christ, it will result in a clear, or good conscience, which in turn leads to a pure heart.  When we can rebuke false teachings in our life, our faith remains in tact and we are able to have love for God and others.  Paul’s purpose was to bring about true love in all Christians.

6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

Have you ever been around people who will argue over scripture?  Some see it one way, others interpret it differently.  Many times, we spend valuable time arguing over what a verse means that we totally miss God’s message.  We should never allow ourselves to be caught up in petty discussions regarding the messages of the Bible and be distracted from our true purpose.  The main point of the scripture is the Good News of Jesus Christ and we should keep our focus on this point.  We should be reading, studying, and know what the Bible says, apply it to our lives, and teach it to others, instead of allowing others to drag us into a competition of who knows more or who knows better.  The small details of the Bible are certainly important, but don’t let anyone take you away from the main focus by challenging scripture.  This is just another ploy that Satan uses to distract us and an attempt to pull us away from our faith.

 I remember a question that I was once asked about the Old Testament and incest.  I was very young in my faith and studies and couldn’t give an answer so I took the question to my Pastor.  He immediately taught me a valuable lesson on discernment.  Many times, those who are unbelievers will try to trip you up on your knowledge, or will try to get you into a discussion that is a no-win situation.  As Christians, we need to learn to discern what questions should be answered and which ones we should not attempt, being aware that they are for a specific purpose and that is only to make the Bible look bad or look untrue.  The Bible has many, many mysteries that we will never have answers to.  If you are someone that requires answers for every question, you may never fully understand the concept of having faith in God.  There are many things that I don’t understand, but I have faith in God and trust that when He sees it is important for me to know, I will know.

The Law’s purpose is to show nonbelievers that they are sinners and bring them to God, and the Law is good if it is used in this way.  But, the false teachers were trying to impress the people and be important by becoming teachers of the Law even though they didn’t understand its purpose.  The Law does not make people right with God, nor does it provide the forgiveness of sins.  It is like a mirror that reflects our sinfulness back to us.  It provides us with the knowledge that as sinners, we are in need of a Savior and in accepting Jesus Christ as our LORD and Saviour, we are forgiven of our sins and made anew.

God’s grace is abundant for us, and as we grow in our faith, our love grows too.  Ignorance of Jesus Christ does not condone a sinful nature.  Through our conscience, we are made aware of what is right and what is wrong.    Paul is not claiming that he received mercy because he was ignorant, he was saying that he sinned before he proclaimed his faith in Jesus Christ.  He is acknowledging that his salvation was not deserved.

Paul summarized the message of Good News in this verse.  When Paul uses the address this is a faithful saying, he is emphasizing his message which we will also see used in his letter to Titus and his second letter to Timothy.  Paul is emphasizing that although we may consider ourselves to be the absolute worst sinner in the world, Jesus still loves us and wants us to come to Him.  Jesus Christ came into the world to save us from sin, not to show us how to live or challenge us to be good people.  His plan of salvation is available to everyone and anyone, no one is excluded, and salvation gives us the promise of eternal life.  Have you accepted Jesus’ offer of salvation?

In Paul’s reflections on God’s mercy, he recites an emotional embrace and praise of God.  Have you ever been so enthralled by the love of God in your life that you just broke out in praise and worship?  To become so overwhelmed by God’s love is a wonderful experience.  Paul was certainly experiencing this in verse 17 as we can assume that these descriptive words of God were written explicitly by Paul.

 Paul used the word shipwreck to show those who had wrecked their faith, because they had not protected their faith.  As Christians, we must keep our conscience clear by treasuring our faith more than anything else in our life.  We must apply our faith to our daily lives and do what is right.  When we ignore our conscience, we leave our hearts open for hardening.  God speaks to us through our conscience and anytime that we feel that tug on our heart, we should listen and obey what we hear.  If we continue to ignore these words from God, eventually the lines between right and wrong will be blurred and we will no longer be able to differentiate.

.  He was responsible for weakening the people’s faith by claiming that the resurrection had already occurred.  It is assumed that Alexander was an associate of his.  When Paul says that he delivered them unto Satan, it means that he excommunicated them from the church.  There are many verses in the Bible that discuss church discipline.  Today, we see more and more churches compromising in their belief system and standards, and have become lenient regarding discipline within the church towards those who deliberately sin.  The purpose of church discipline is not to punish, but to correct the offender.  The church is to be quick and firm in handling any situation to prevent division within the church.  Discipline should be done in such a way that it brings the offender back to Christ instead of pushing him away.  The church should never condemn, withhold forgiveness, or shun a fellow brother in discipline.  But, when a church overlooks issues and avoids discipline, it is doing its member a disservice.  They are not at all helping their fellow brethren in Christ, but hindering him by allowing him to continue his action or words.
