Study of Romans, Chapter 16 Paul Concludes His Letter To The Romans

Print Friendly

Romans

Paul’s purpose in writing the letter to the Romans was to introduce himself and give a brief sample of his message before arriving there.  His plan was to visit Rome on his way to Spain, although he didn’t arrive in Rome as he had imagined.  Paul began his letter to the Romans by presenting the Gospel and his faith in the Word of God.  He then shares the plan of salvation for everyone.  He addresses the Jews and Gentiles, and how they each fit into God’s plan, and how to live in submission to Jesus Christ, how to love and serve others.  In chapter 16, we see Paul concluding his letter with some final thoughts and saluting his traveling companions.

16 1 I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: 2 That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.

1 I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea:

2 That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you:  for she hath been a succourer [helper] of many, and of myself also.

The word servant is often translated to deacon in Greek literature, and although this verse appears supportive of women in this role, we see no specifics as to duties or requirements for the holding of this position.  Therefore, we can view Phebe in the important role of a helper and supporter of Paul’s ministry.  Throughout this chapter, we can see salutes going out to numerous women, showing us that women did, in fact, play an important role in the early church.

In all of the studies I have viewed on this verse, all indications point to Phebe as the carrier of this letter from Corinth to Rome.

Priscilla and Aquila were a married couple that had befriended Paul along his journey, who had been expelled out of Rome.  They too were missionaries.  In the Book of Acts, we learn that Priscilla and Aquila were Christians prior to meeting Paul, and that they shared much information with him about Rome.  They were also helpful in spreading the message of the Gospel in Corinth, Ephesus, and Rome once they were allowed to return.

My husband is the history buff in the family, so when it comes to lists of names in the Bible and their position, I most often tend to skim over them.  In doing so, I have realized that I am missing a lot and that there is much insight into taking a closer look at who is addressed and the position, or title that is given them in these verses.

Paul is clear in his warning to the church.  He warns against anyone who places their interests above the church that their sole purpose is to divide and deceive.  This is an abomination to God and Paul warns that we should avoid people who do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ and are set on destruction of the church.

As Christians, it is important for us to read and study God’s Word on a daily basis.  It is only through our knowledge of God’s message that we can discern false teachers.  If we do not know what the Bible contains in scripture, how would we be able to recognize when someone is leading us astray.  Paul warns the church that they must be alert and stay away from these false teachers.  In the end, Satan will be trodden under the feet of Jesus.  We are given that promise in the Word.

Throughout the Old Testament, many mysteries have been established in the law and through the words of the prophets.  It wasn’t until Jesus Christ that those mysteries were revealed and could be understood by the people.  In this, we should be giving God all the glory each and every day.

In our world today, we are open to many influences.  The message of Paul regarding unity, service, and love should resonate within us and be applied to our life.  Paul proclaimed that God’s grace was a gospel for all nations, and although Paul had not been to all of the cities, God’s message was spreading across the world.  Paul had a great enthusiasm for sharing the word of God.  Do we share in that enthusiasm with Paul?  Are we just as excited to talk with others about Jesus Christ?
