Study of Romans, Chapter 14 Differences Of Opinion

Church

There will always be differences of opinion within the church surrounding what is right and wrong.  We have much scripture that goes into detail of what is right and what is wrong, but in this chapter, Paul addresses the ‘gray’ areas.  Within a very large group of people, we can never expect to have everyone agree on every single subject.  Differences of opinion should be handled with love, instead of fear or avoidance.

Romans 14:1-2Romans 14:1-2

1 Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.

2 For one believeth that he may eat all things:  another, who is weak, eateth herbs.

We must accept other’s beliefs who are weak in faith, and should not argue with them about their opinion of right and wrong.  Paul uses the example of one who may eat anything, and others who believe in being a vegetarian.  Doubtful disputations means that we should not pass judgment on the issues that are a matter of opinion.  Sometimes, we see that someone must abstain from something that is seen as morally indifferent.  They may feel convicted that they must stay away from certain things that may not necessarily be sinful, and we should not pass judgment on their belief.

We can all come to a better understanding of the teachings of the Bible if we respectfully share ideas and opinions, and we learn to listen and accept another’s point of view.  Implicating this avenue of acceptance, we can open ourselves up to gaining more knowledge and understanding of the Word.  Paul refers to weak in faith, which basically means that we all have our areas of weakness and our areas of strength.  We do not all interpret the Bible in the same way, nor do we all understand at the same speed.  When we can openly bring together our strengths and weaknesses within a group of Christians, we can solidify the unity in Christ among all of us.  Our strength in our faith is tested and tried true when we are able to mingle among weak areas of others without falling into that sinful nature.  When we reach out in service to the Lord, we must be careful to work in areas of our faith, where we will not be tempted by the world.  In our areas of weakness, we must use caution until we can strengthen those areas.

As a Christian, we must never look down on those with certain beliefs that reflect their background or maturity in faith that differ from ours, nor should we condemn or judge those whose beliefs may differ from ours.  God accepts all believers and expects that all Christians have mutual respect and tolerance of other Christians.

Ye observe days, and months, and times and years.

Paul ends this passage with reference to Holy Days.  Throughout our world, we see Christians observing different days according to their convictions.  We should put aside our judgmental attitude as to which days are right and which days are wrong, but observe the days that we feel are right in our heart under guidance of the Lord.

Romans 14:6Romans 14:6

Again, Paul is emphasizing that our practices should all be done out of conviction before God.  We must believe that we belong to God and that everything we do is under His guidance.

All of us worship on a certain day.  Some may worship on Saturday, others on Sunday.  Whenever you worship, you should be worshiping on a special day between you and your Lord to honor Him.  Foods are another area that many people differ in, so what is eaten is done so by giving thanks to God before eating.  Do not use judgment against those who believe that they should abstain from certain foods, because they are also giving thanks to the Lord prior to their meal.

How often have you found yourself making judgment against another believer because they are doing something that you personally dislike?  Maybe a believer is involved in something that is a cultural bias to you, do you condemn them?  When we find ourselves doing this, we need to place ourselves in check.  This kind of mindset is reflective of a weak faith, and a belief that God is unable to guide His children in their path.

We are not held accountable to anyone except Jesus Christ .  When the Judgment Seat of Christ is spoken of, it is not a place of punishment for believers, but rather a place of rewards .  There will be some believers that receive additional awards for their faithfulness.  When we stand before that throne, will you be worried about what your neighbor is doing?  Or will you be focused on what you have done to bring your Lord honor and glory?  We will give account to God why, or why we did not, do everything within our ability to share the Gospel with anyone and everyone.  We will see all strength levels of faith, and each will account for their deeds.

When we remember where Paul came from, his background would have led him to believe that certain foods were unclean.  But through Jesus Christ, he came to know that a distinction between foods was no longer valid.  Certain ethnic cultures, especially Jewish backgrounds, may not have made this transition and we, as Christians, should not push them into such.

One of the problems between ‘strong’ and ‘weak’ Christians is how we act without regard to the affect it has on others.  Paul is saying that if we do something that bothers another Christian, we are not doing it in love.  We should never allow our actions to ruin someone for whom Christ died for.

1 Corinthians 8:11-131 Corinthians 8:11-13
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

The bottom line is that a strong Christian must live in love and not consciously do anything that will bring down a weak believer.  We should do everything that we can to lift them up in their faith, by encouraging them to be educated by God through the Holy Spirit.  We must never attempt to discourage someone spiritually by leading them to go against, or ignore their conscience.

Paul is saying that we will never be criticized for doing something that we believe is good.  The kingdom of God is not what we eat, but of how we live.  We should live a life of goodness, and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.  If we learn to serve Christ with this type of attitude, then we will be acceptable to God and others will also approve of us.  With this in mind, we should strive to live in harmony within the church and work to build each other up.

If we govern everything we do and say with love, our Christianity will show through to others.  We must allow the Holy Spirit to work through us so that we may come together as a united body of Christ within the church.  Our actions should reflect the manifestation of the Holy Spirit within us, and should serve Christ and help other Christians grow in their faith.

21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.

We should not destroy the work of God over what we eat, or don’t eat.  We must remember that all foods are acceptable, but if something makes another person stumble, then we must avoid it. It is better to avoid food or wine if it means that that act would cause  another believer to stumble.

Sin is not something that is held privately.  It is out there…in the open for all to see.  Anytime that we perform an action, or speak a word, it affects others.  We must take into account how our actions and words reflect on others.  If we are a Christian of strong faith, then we must not be judgmental, looking down on another, but must treat them with love, patience, and respect.

Romans 14:22-23Romans 14:22-23

When we complete an action or word and have a clear conviction of conscience, we are blessed.  But, if we ever doubt the action or word we are about to embark upon, and go ahead and do it, then we are sinning because we have not followed our convictions.  Whenever you do anything that you believe is not right, you are committing sin.  Whenever we go against our convictions, we are left with a guilty conscience.

Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

Our convictions are from God, showing us that something is wrong, or unacceptable in His eyes.  As a Christian, what I am convicted of may not be the same as you, and vise versa.  This brings us right back to the original message of Paul that not all believers will develop at the same pace, nor will we all be in total agreement over matters of the church.  We must all learn to respect our differences through love.
