Study of Romans, Chapter 13 Government’s Role In A Christian’s Life

government

When it comes to government, we all have a different idea of how Christians should interact with the them.  Some feel that government is so corrupt that Christians should not involve themselves in the matters of government in any way.  Others believe that government and Christians can be loyal to both and work for either, keeping spiritual and physical separate, by not confusing the two they try to compliment each other but they do not work together as a team. Lastly, you have some that view that we have a responsibility as Christians to make our government better if we are able, by working in political arenas, or electing Christian officials into positions of influence with the purpose of working together for the betterment of all.

Regardless of what position you take, we as Christians, still have a responsibility when it comes to government.  We must all submit to the authority of government, for those who have been given authority have been done so by God.  We may not approve of, or agree with what our authorities are doing, but we our submission is an obligation for all of mankind, not just Christians.  The higher powers are established by God.

Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

Although God commands that we submit and follow our governing powers, we should never allow our government to force us into disobeying God.  If we are ever placed in a position where we have to choose between God and our government, then we would most certainly choose God.  Jesus and his apostles never disobeyed, or rebelled against, the government for personal reasons.  If they were put in that position that they had to make a choice between God and government, they chose God, and suffered the consequences.  On many occasions, they were threatened, beaten, tortured, thrown into jail, and even executed for their beliefs.  We are all aware that throughout the world, it seems that our nation’s governments are corrupt and seeking more and more power over the people as a whole.  If we come to a point in our life that we must disobey our nation’s government, we must also realize that consequences will be enforced upon us.  We must always be ready to accept these consequences, standing strong in our convictions.

rioting against government

Romans 13:2-4Romans 13:2-4
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

Keeping in mind that that the higher powers are established by God, then when we rebel against our government, we are essentially rebelling against God, and shall be punished.  For those who are doing right, the rulers do not instill fear in them, but that fear arises in those who are doing wrong.  Government originally began as an ordinance of God.  It is not a means of salvation to the world, but was to be used to set boundaries for human behavior, and to restrain sin.  In our world today, we see the corruption and power-hungry governments, pushing their influence on the people.  But, in Paul’s day, the authorities were primarily doing their duty, and if people were doing what was right, there was no need to be afraid.  If people were not, then they should fear, for if caught, they would face punishment.  The purpose of government is to uphold the good and punish the evil.  People who are elected into the government are done so to protect the good and are servants of God.  The sword represents the power given to authorities to protect all mankind.

When I look at our government through my ‘personal glasses’, I am amazed that one man, our president, could make such a drastic change in our government and nation.  I am not happy with the changes that he has made, nor do I approve of his tactics or his agenda.  When I hear something on the news, or read an article, my blood boils at how our nation has fallen from the position of power I have always known it to be.  But then a couple distinct verses comes to mind, John 15:19John 15:19
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

gently enter my mind, reminding me that the Lord is with me, I shall not fear.  What can man do to me?  Absolutely nothing!  If God is for us, who can be against us?  No one!  As Christians, we are all born again anew and are now one with Christ.  We no longer have to fear this world, or what this world thinks it can do to us through it’s powers and authority.  For when Christ died on the cross, He eliminated sin and death for all of those who have accepted Him as their LORD and Savior.  Yes, I agree, we all have to make a living and live our life here on earth.  But it is how we live our life that is important.  We are here for a purpose, and that is to share the Gospel of Christ and show others what Christ did for us.  When I keep this in the forefront of my mind, I no longer fear the government, or their threats.  They may be able to inflict pain on my physical body, but if I remain strong in my faith and have Jesus with me, they cannot touch me spiritually!

In order to keep a clear conscience and to avoid any punishment, we must submit to our authorities.  We must faithfully pay our taxes, or any dues that are deemed by our government.  We must not cause upheaval and chaos for our own personal reasons, but give honor to those who are serving in the positions of honor.

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

It is easy for us to become distracted by all the changes that are rapidly occurring around us in our world today.  Sin seems to be around ever corner, and the line between good and evil is becoming clearer each day.  We want the world we live in to remain in tact, and for our government to remain untouched by corruption and deceit.  But, this is the pride of life, and will pass away with the rest of the world when the time comes.  If we keep our purpose in mind at all times, remembering that we are here to do the will of God, and that is our sole purpose, then we are promised that we will not pass away, but have eternal life with our Father in heaven.

There is no way that we could ever repay the debt that Jesus Christ paid on that wooden cross on Calvary, and He doesn’t ask much of us as His children, even though we will always be obligated to Him for the love that He pours out on us.  Paul ties together loving one another with the fulfillment of the law.  As Christians, we should never stop loving as long as we have breath in our body.  Through our love of our Lord, we fulfill the first four commands and then the rest of the law is fulfilled by loving our neighbor.

Love worketh no ill to his neighbour:  therefore love is the  fulfilling of the law.

If one looks at all the scripture that surrounds love, we can see this is extremely important to God.  There is no room for misinterpretation.  God loves us so very much and He asks us to love others in the very same way.  We should never come to a point in our Christian life that we feel that we have loved enough.  There will always be room for love.

Many of us suffer from low self-image and lack of self-confidence.  But that doesn’t mean we don’t love ourselves.  In order to love another, we must be able to first love ourselves.  Some see that as conceit, but it is not.  We have been socially conditioned to believe that if we say, or act like we love ourselves, then we are conceited.   In order for us to care for ourselves, we must love ourselves first.  If someone hurts you intentionally, you feel anger.  For us to love another as ourselves, we must be consciously aware of how others around us are being cared for and treated.

The law of love laid down by God far exceeds any religious or civil laws. It may be easy for some to excuse their lack of interest in others by feeling that it is not their legal obligation to care for them.  As Christians, we must rise above this mindset, and love as Christ intended us to love.  When we are loving others, and putting them before ourselves, we are doing no wrong in the eyes of God.

Paul is talking with urgency here to the people.  As Christians, we need to wake up!  Our salvation is so much closer than when we first believed.  The darkness of the night is almost gone and the light of salvation will soon be upon us.  To be asleep means to be insensitive to the demands of Christ on our life as a Christian.  Christ will soon be returning to remove the believers from this world, and we must be paying attention.  The night is the time that this world belongs to the power of the air, or Satan [Ephesians 2:2Ephesians 2:2

As Jesus’ return draws nearer, Paul is warning that we must be aware of our behavior at all times.  As the time gets shorter, the need for love grows stronger.  When we take a look around our environment, we see that to be true.

I found your commentary and the Scriptures quoted to be of great comfort, Mary. Like you, I am tempted to lose heart at what I see happening in this country, but if we remain focused on Jesus and His promises, we can rest in Him, knowing He will one day return to claim His own.
    Blessings, my friend!

Yes Martha, with everything that is going on, not just here in our nation, but around the entire world, we can’t help to become disheartened by it all. Without my faith in God, it would easy to become depressed by all I read and hear. I patiently await His return, knowing that we will not longer face these daily challenges 🙂

Don't be shy! We would love to hear from you!
