Study of Romans, Chapter 12 Christian Life And Service

Print Friendly

Christian life

As a Christian, what exactly should our life be like, and what service should we provide?  Paul has frequently made statements, in chapters 1-11, about what God has done for us prior to summarizing our response.  In chapters 12-15, Paul is focused on our duty as a Christian.  We shall see that when we become a Christian, our life undergoes a transformation through the renewing of our mind.  This occurs through prayer, reading and studying God’s Word, worship, and reflection on the acts of God as the Holy Spirit works within us.  Our service involves our dedication and commitment of our total being to living for God’s honor and glory.  As a Christian, we should be recognized as different than non-Christians through our life and service.

Romans 12:1-2Romans 12:1-2
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

12 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Back in the times of the Old Testament, animals were sacrificed and placed on the altar.  Although sacrifice was important, God made it clear that obedience from the heart was much more important.

God is looking for us to submit ourselves as a living sacrifice unto Him, not animals. Each day, we must lay aside our own desires to follow him.  We must allow God to work in us, putting all of our energy and resources at His disposal!  Proverbs 3:5-6Proverbs 3:5-6
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

WP-Bible plugin
tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding and he will direct our paths.  If we put our trust in God, he will guide and direct our life.  Many argue that they can’t trust someone they can’t see.  What if someone that you had never met, say maybe they lived in another country, continuously gave you free gifts and was always there for you in good times as well as bad, and you find that this person was really an asset to your life; he/she has helped you, directed and assisted you in your decision-making.  Would you not trust that person?  If he/she wrote you letters, and told you things that he/she knew were going to happen and you needed to do to prevent your life ending in ultimate pain, would you not believe that person?  Well, God has done all of this, plus much, much more!

transformation

God’s plan for us as believers is perfect and without flaw.  He expects us to become anew with a renewed mind, and to live in honor to him through obedience.  God sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, to make this new life possible for us to obtain, and this alone should make us want to willingly and joyfully be a living sacrifice for his service.  We are not to copy the behavior and traditions we see around us in this world.  When we become believers, our mind is transformed into a new way of thinking.  We will learn God’s will for us, which is a good and pleasing, perfect plan.  God offers us a radical transformation from sinners into saints.  We trade in our old filthy rags of sin for the royal robe of righteousness in Christ.

Romans 12:3Romans 12:3
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. soberly: Gr. to sobriety

3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

God wants all of us to feel good about ourselves.  He doesn’t desire for any of us to suffer lack of confidence or self-image.  But, many overestimate themselves and become arrogant thinking that they are better than others, or they are above the masses.  This is a disastrous way of thinking and is a result in evaluating our self-worth according to worldly standards in success and achievement  instead of aligning our identity with Christ and conducting ourselves in humility.  We should not be concerned with what others think of us, or how they see us, but in how God sees us through his eyes.

Can you even begin to imagine if we were all made the same; all of us had the same talents?  We would be nothing more than a military of people who do everything the same; no variation in our attributes.  We are truly blessed when we realize that although God made us in his image, we are all also made unique; each with a special gift.  This allows each of to be a follower of Christ, but also for each of us to perform a different service for Christ, all coming together as one.

9 Let love be without dissimulation [hypocrisy].  Abhor that which is evil; cleave [cling] to that which is good.

Most of us are raised with manners, and socially acceptable behavior.  We know how to be courteous and kind to others, even when we may not feel like it.  But God tells us that we are to love without dissimulation; a real, sincere, genuine love.  This is the kind of love that reaches far beyond our manners and socially acceptable behavior; it is a selfless, unconditional love for another without sexual implications, agape love.  When we allow God to work through us, we can display this type of love, regardless of the response that we receive from others.  We should not be ‘fake’ in this love, but truly loving as Jesus Christ loved.

This message from Paul surrounds how important love is and how love affects a believer’s behavior towards others.  As Christians, we are a family of one, and should honor one another, treat one another with tenderness and brotherly love.

Romans 12:10-16Romans 12:10-16

15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

16 Be of the same mind one toward another.  Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate.  Be not wise in your own conceits.

Honor comes in two forms: ulterior motives and no strings attached.  We honor certain people because of how they can benefit us, or what we can gain from that particular relationship.  This is not God’s way of honor, which is done with love.  As a Christian, we honor others because they are created in the image of God, we are all brothers and sisters in the family of Christ, and because each of us have a unique contribution to make in God’s plan.  This should never become a competition between Christians.  A good rule of thumb is to always put others first!

We should not be of the lazy kind, but work hard in everything we do, and serve God with enthusiasm.  We should continue to rejoice in our hope in God’s promises, be patient during difficult times, and continue in prayer.  Always be willing to help those in need and be hospitable to everyone you meet.  Give blessing to those who hate and curse you, but don’t curse them.  Be happy with those who are happy, and cry with those who cry.  Be supportive and encourage others, living in harmony, and don’t be so proud that you can’t enjoy the company of simple people.  And lastly, Paul adds that we should never think that we have all the answers to everything; or know it all!

We should never seek a way to pay back evil with more evil.  Strive to do things in such a way that we are honorable, and that we should live in peace with everyone.  Resist the temptation to take revenge upon anyone for doing you harm.  Leave that to the righteous anger of God, for it is written that Vengeance is mine; I will repay.  If someone is your enemy, feed and give him drink, for it will bring shame upon them.  Conquering evil is not done by doing more evil, but done by being good.

27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,

WP-Bible plugin

But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,

Love is at the core of the Christian life.  If we can love as Jesus loves, then we are able to forgive.  Forgiving someone for wronging us does not mean we excuse their behavior or action, but we are able to pass God’s grace on to them, which is an undeserved favor from God for both us and them.  When we are open to our enemy, we are recognizing him, forgiving him, and loving him regardless of the sin.  This is exactly what Jesus Christ did for us, and we should strive to show that same love to others.

It is our natural instinct to lash out at those who hurt us, but this does not help you or them.  In some cases, forgiving may even seem impossible to you.  But, Paul is telling the people that when someone hurts you, you should befriend them.  This may do one of three things:  it may bring the relationship to a reconciliation; the person who has done you wrong may feel ashamed and change their ways; and delivering evil for evil will hurt you as much as it will hurt the other person.  Regardless of the outcome, forgiving the person who has wronged you will release you of a burden of bitterness.
