Study of Romans, Chapter 11 God’s Mercy On Israel

Israel

God’s mercy on Israel is never slacking, she has just been ‘set aside’ until God has finished His Gentile work in the church.  At that time, we shall see Israel restored and flourish in blessings from God.

Romans 11:1-4Romans 11:1-4
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

11 1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, of Elias: Gr. in Elias? 3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. 4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.

4 But what saith the answer of God unto him?  I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.

Paul begins by assuring the people that God has not cast away his people.  The nation of Israel was chosen by God from the very beginning, to be the people who would take the Word of God  and the promise of Salvation to all nations.  The Jewish nation would not be saved as a whole, but only those Jews who placed their faith in Jesus Christ would be saved.  There is no option for salvation just because you belong to a certain nation.  Paul notes that not all Jews have rejected God’s message of salvation and that he, among also the disciples, were Jews as were many of the early Christian missionaries.

Paul continues on to reference scripture regarding Elijah complaining to God about the people of Israel, reporting that the prophets had been killed and the altars were torn down.  In the scripture, Elijah expresses that he felt he was the only one left and feared for his life as well.  But God answered him, informing him that there were 7,000re 7,000

6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works:  otherwise grace is no more grace.  But if it be of works, then is it no more grace:  otherwise work is no more work.

Today, there are few remaining people of Israel that have held constant in their faith because of God’s grace.  If you have ever found yourself thinking that God loves you because you are a good person, or that because you are good you deserve God’s love, then you do not totally understand salvation.  It is through God’s grace that we are saved, and has nothing to do with our works.  If it was determined by our works, then God’s grace would not be what it really is…a free and undeserved gift!

The people of Israel are a proud and stubborn people, and the land that they received long ago was not deserved.  Even after all of their sinful words and actions against God, Paul is convinced that the remnant of faithful Jewish believers existing during this time is proof of the grace of God.

The Jewish nation had missed salvation because they were so busy seeking it through their works.  The election are the believing Israelites and have obtained salvation, but the majority were blind, deaf, and hearts hardened in their unbelief.  Paul makes reference to scripture:

The Jewish people were unable to see what God was doing among them, but even during the most difficult of times, the nation was able to endure because of the remnant that remained faithful to God.  We will see their blindness come to a peak during the middle of the tribulation period.  This will be a very trying time for the people of Israel.

People who continually reject God’s message will eventually be unable to understand it.  During Paul’s missionary journeys, he witnessed this happening in the Jewish congregations.

The Jewish people did not stumble and fall past recovery.  They disobeyed, so God opened the path of salvation to the Gentiles.  God wanted his people of Israel to become jealous and go after it for themselves.  If the fall of the Israel’s people by turning God’s offer of salvation away caused the Gentiles to be enriched, then how much greater shall the blessing be when the Israelites accept God’s offer?

Paul’s vision was of a church that all Jews and Gentiles would be united in their love for God and obedience to God.  But, over the centuries, this has not come to pass.  If anything, as the Christian churches have gotten stronger, the Jews have been pushed away and persecuted.  As a Christian, we should not reject or persecute anyone, but instead let the love of Christ shine through us.  The Jews are God’s chosen people and there will be a day that the Jews and the Gentiles unite and worship together in New Jerusalem, where Jesus Christ will reign and rule.  We must realize that the rejection that Paul speaks of has a specific purpose and will not last forever.  When Israel transgressed, it opened an opportunity for the gospel to be taken to the Gentiles.  Through God’s acceptance of the Gentiles, the Jews became jealous and through this they repented and came to God.  The word fulness in the verse is showing that God’s promise to restore Israel will come to pass.

Paul was a Jewish missionary taking the gospel to the Gentiles and he reminded his Jewish brothers of this fact.  He hoped that they would also have the desired to be ‘saved’. Through the rejection of the Jews, the Gentiles benefited by being given the plan of salvation.  This was one of the greatest blessings to the Gentile nations that they had ever had:  to have the Word of God preached to the world.  Paul notes that when the Jew comes to know Jesus Christ, there is a great celebration as though someone has been raised from the dead and come back to life.

21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.

22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God:  on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness:  otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in:  for God is able to graff them in again.

24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree:  how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?

25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

Abraham was holy, so his descendants will also be holy, for if the roots of the tree are holy, then so will the branches be.  But, some of the branches, some people of Israel, have been broken off.  The Gentiles are the branches of a wild olive tree that have been grafted in, allowing the Gentiles to receive the same blessing that God promised Abraham and his descendants.  As a gentile, we must not boast about this and must remember that we are just a branch and not the root itself.  The branches that were broken off were done so because those people of Israel didn’t believe in Jesus Christ, and we were grafted to the tree because we did believe.  Beware of becoming to confident with this knowledge because if God did not spare the original branches, he won’t spare you either.  God is both kind and severe in character.  For those who were disobedient and did not believe, God was severe in punishment.  He is kind and loving to those who trust in his kindness, but once you stop trusting in Him you will also be removed from the tree.

Any lost Jew, or Gentile that turns to God and believes, he will be grafted back onto the tree.  Keep in mind that the Gentiles are of the wild olive tree which when grafted into the cultivated olive tree would be going against all nature, then how much easier it would be to graft the original branches that were removed back to their original tree?  We know from scripture that Israel will not always have a hardened heart, but only until the full number of Gentiles come to Jesus Christ.  God rejecting some of the Jews is not something that should make us feel proud and arrogant.  Both Jews and Gentiles depend on the tree’s nourishment and Jesus Christ for life.  We must hold strongly onto our faith.  This is a product of our salvation and should not be taken lightly.

When the Israelites reject God, it is to the benefit of Gentiles.  We must not forget that Israel is God’s chosen and He still loves them deeply and unconditionally, and will keep the promises that were made long ago to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  Both the covenants and promises that God made to Israel can never be removed.  In this way, Paul shares that the Jews and Gentiles actually benefit each other.  When God gives a blessing to one group, the other group shares in that blessing.

Paul turns here at this point to more of a worship, than a talk.  God’s riches, wisdom, and knowledge are way beyond our comprehension.  He asks who can understand the mind of the Lord?  Who can understand His decisions?  Is there anyone who knows the Lord’s thoughts, or is in a position to give God advice?  Is there anyone who has given God so much that God needs to repay that person?  Surely not!
