salvation

Salvation is for everyone!  No one is excluded from God’s plan of salvation.  But what happens to those who believe in God, but do not believe in Jesus Christ?

Romans 10:1Romans 10:1

10 1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

This was a very real issue for Paul and laid heavy on his heart.  The Jewish people believed in God, but not in Jesus Christ, and it remains this way today for many people, not only Jews.  For those who believe in God, but not Christ, what will happen to them?  Have they not received salvation?

John 14:6John 14:6

Neither is there salvation in any other:  for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

If simply believing in God brought salvation, then Paul surely would not have worked as hard as he did and sacrificed as much as he did in order to teach people about Christ.  Salvation is for everyone, but salvation comes only through Jesus Christ.  We cannot have a true relationship with God without Jesus Christ.  God sent Jesus to this earth to bring God and man together, and there is no other way to come to God other than through Jesus Christ.

Romans 10:2-4Romans 10:2-4
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

Paul recognized Israel’s enthusiasm for God, but the people were so worried about gaining their own righteousness, they completely missed the mark!  Not only did they miss God’s righteousness, the were in opposition to it!  They had become so self-righteous through their hard work, that when Paul presented the righteousness that is attained through Jesus Christ, they were too proud to consider it.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets:  I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Not recognizing Jesus Christ as the Messiah, they didn’t have the knowledge that Jesus put an end to the law as being the way to obtain righteousness.  Israel had mistaken the law’s purpose: to guide us in the direction of righteousness attainable only by believing in Jesus Christ.  The Jews were spending so much time establishing customs and tradition, in addition to the Law, in an effort to make themselves acceptable to God, that they never saw their true Messiah.  In this scenario, the only way to salvation would be through perfectionism, which is impossible for us to obtain.

If we were to be saved by the Law, it would require perfection from each and every one of us.  We would have to live a perfect life, never sinning even once!  We know that this is an impossibility.  Knowing this to be true, many ask “why would God give us a law that he was fully aware no one would be able to keep?”  In Galatians 3:19Galatians 3:19
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

, Paul explains that the law was in place to show us just how guilty we are.  If the law wasn’t in place and our flaws were never pointed out to us, why would we need a Savior?  There was also the sacrificial system (Ceremonial Laws Leviticus 19) in place attached to the law, which was to teach and prepare us for when the true sacrifice, Jesus Christ, came so that we would be able to understand His work and purpose.  All of these Laws were to be kept until the coming of Jesus Christ.

If one chooses to live by the law as their means of salvation, the that is the way they shall live.  Breaking just one commandment brings condemnation without salvation.  The Law cannot reverse the condemnation, our only hope is salvation through Jesus Christ.

This passage is often referred to as the Sinner’s Prayer.  God did not make the process of salvation difficult or complicated.  The opportunity of salvation is as close to you as your mouth and heart.  Confession for salvation is not us kneeling down and confessing every sin we have committed, but rather confessing that Jesus Christ is LORD and believing these words with our heart.  All who call upon him and confess with their mouth and believe in their heart shall be saved.

I think that it is very important to make a note here.  If you have read other studies on this site, you will already know that I often state that there is no middle ground with God.  You are either with God, or against God.  In the verses referenced above, Matthew and Luke basically share the same message:  those who confess Jesus Christ is LORD before man, He shall also confess before His Father in heaven on our behalf.  If we continue on to the next verse Matthew 10:33Matthew 10:33

, you will see that Jesus is very clear for those who deny Him:  He will deny YOU before His Father.  There is no room for misinterpretation of what Jesus is saying to us:  if we accept and proclaim Jesus is LORD we are with him, but if we do not, we are against Him, which means we are with the world.  If you have not chosen Jesus Christ as your LORD and Savior, may you feel drawn to do so today.  Do not wait until it is too late.  None of us know exactly how long we are here, and we should never take for granted the time that we have.  We never know what tomorrow will bring.

How can one believe in Jesus Christ and call on Him if they have never heard about Him?  It’s very simple…we are the answer, the believers!  In order to be called to witness to others (share the Gospel), we must believe through faith ourselves.  Salvation is acquired through hearing the truth of the gospel and then responding to it.  When we accept Christ as our LORD and Savior, God gives us the knowledge of understanding the Word, and then God sends us in whatever way, shape, or form needed to spread the Good News of the Gospel to others.

When you find a good deal on something, say a purchase, do you not share it with your friends and neighbors?  Do you not want them to get a great deal as you did?  Why wouldn’t you? Then, why should you hesitate to share the free gift of Salvation with others?  The free gift of eternal life through Salvation is better than any great deal we will ever see offered in this world, should we not share it with everyone we meet?

Do you think that the Jews, feeling that they were superior to the Gentiles, felt insulted by Paul’s words?  The Jews had listened, but simply refused to believe, whereas the Gentiles embraced God’s message.  By Paul using these quoted Old Testament verses, he was revealing that the conversion of the Gentiles had been prophesied.  Israel remained, and remains today, a stubborn nation to God’s message.
