Study of Romans, Chapter 8 The Holy Spirit Sets Us Free From Sin

If you were in the Court of Law on trial, facing death row, and the Judge stood up and said:  “not guilty, set him/her free‘, would those words not be the sweetest words your ears ever heard?  Would you not be totally overwhelmed with joy?  Would you not be so thankful to the judge that words could not even convey how you were feeling at the moment?  Jesus is our judge, and He has the power and authority to set us free!  When we are washed by the blood of Jesus Christ, all of our guilt, our sin, is washed away and we begin with a clean slate.  So, why do so many reject Jesus and His plan of Salvation?

Romans 8:1-2Romans 8:1-2

When we belong to Jesus Christ, there is no condemnation towards us.  As we walk with the Spirit, the Spirit releases us from the hold of the law; the Spirit frees us from the power of sin that leads to death.

When Paul speaks of the flesh, he is not referring the the flesh of the human body, but rather the sinful nature; the power of sin, that lives within us.  When we consider that everyone in the world is basically considered to be on ‘death row’ of life, and that Jesus is our judge, He is the only one who can offer us the freedom from sin that we desire.  Without Jesus Christ and what He did for us at the cross, we would have no hope in life.  We would just be going through the motions, die, and that would be it.  But Praise Be To God!  Jesus Christ is very much alive and is offering each of us salvation.

Holy Spirit

The Spirit of life that Paul refers to is the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is behind the birth of each Christian and gives us the power that we so need to live each day as a Christian.

Romans 8:3-4Romans 8:3-4

3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: for sin: or, by a sacrifice for sin 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

We could never stand righteous before God through the law, but the law remains as a guideline for how we should strive to live as a believer in Jesus Christ.  Because of our weakness of our sinful nature, we could never be saved by the law, so God did what the law could not:  He sent His own Son in a human body like us sinners have, and in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by sacrificing His Son for our sins.  The requirements of the law are now fulfilled, or satisfied, by Jesus’ death and we are now free from sin.  Instead of following our sinful nature, we follow the Spirit.

If we look back in the Old Testament, we can see that many animals were sacrificed as an offering to God at the Temple.  This act showed the Jewish nation the seriousness of sin:  the blood of the animal had to be drawn before their sins could be pardoned.  But, animal blood could not provide the salvation from sin.  In order for that to happen, Jesus Christ had to go to the cross and die for us.  He was the One who paid the penalty for our sins.

Paul is making reference to the thinking of a sinner, the ‘old man’, and if we live of the world we will follow our sinful nature.  When we, the ‘old man’, is told by the Law that we shall not do something, we would rebel and want to do that very thing the Law tells us not to.  But once we have become a believer, we live after the Spirit and seek the things of the Spirit.

Through the help of the Holy Spirit, believers can know the mind of Christ.  There is nothing mysterious, or mystical about it.

Philippians 2:5-11Philippians 2:5-11
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. fashion: or habit 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Bible tells us the mind of Christ, characterized by an attitude of humility and sacrifice; obedience and service.  When we become humble, God will lift us up [Mark 9:35Mark 9:35

Paul has separated people into two groups:  unspiritual and spiritual.  The unspiritual allow themselves to be controlled by their sinful nature, and the spiritual are those who follow after the Spirit.  We all begin in the first category, and would still be there today if Jesus Christ had not come to this earth in human form, died on the cross for our sins, and offered us a way out.  Once we have accepted Jesus, we must strive to follow in His footsteps.  Daily challenges present themselves, and if we simply imagine what Jesus would do in that situation and allow the Holy Spirit to point out to us what is right, then we can go in that direction.

7 Because the carnal [unspiritual] mind is enmity against [hostile to] God:  for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Those who remain living in their sinful nature, unspiritual, are always against God; always rejecting Him.  Our sinful nature does not obey God’s law and never will.  This is why you can never please God if you are not living in the Spirit.  Verse 7 and 8 show us the exact reason that so many people are offended when someone tries to share the Gospel.

I realize that I keep repeating this throughout the studies, but I will continue to repeat is as it is so very important:  there is NO middle ground between God and Satan, you WILL have to make a choice at some time in your life!  You cannot love both God and the world’s values.

Have you ever questioned yourself as to whether you are truly saved?  Many do, but these doubts about our salvation come from Satan.  He likes nothing more than to shake our faith.  If you have sincerely accepted and trusted in Jesus Christ for your salvation, and have acknowledged Him as LORD and Savior, the you have the Holy Spirit residing in you.  Do not wait for a certain feeling or sensation to come over you to  prove that the Holy Spirit is within you, but know with confidence that the Holy Spirit is working within you because Jesus promised this!  You will know because you will believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and we receive eternal life through Him; you will see yourself begin to follow God’s commands; you will receive support and guidance in your daily challenges and in prayer; you will receive the power and strength you need to serve God and to do His will; and you will find yourself fitting into God’s plan to build up His church.  All of this is possible because the Spirit of God lives within you and you are no longer controlled by your sinful nature.

Sadly, those who do not have the Spirit living within them, do not belong to God.  They have turned from God and have rejected His offer of Salvation.  But, as Christians, we have the Spirit living within us, so even though our physical bodies will one day die, the Spirit gives us life because we have been made right with God!  Praise the Lord!  That is a wonderful piece of knowledge in our minds to hold on to!  What better gift could we receive from anyone than the gift of eternal life that God has promised us?

When we accept Jesus as our LORD and Savior, we become children of God and He adopts us into this huge family of believers.  In Roman times, when someone was adopted into a family, he lost all rights with the old family and became heir to his new father’s estate.

Even in our darkest hours of life when we feel we are all alone and God doesn’t hear us, the Holy Spirit is our witness and it is the Spirit that reminds us and encourages us that God is always there and loves us.  As a Christian, we cry out in prayer to our Father in heaven.  The name Abba is an intimate name for Father and is used only by the members of the family.  Wow!  What a privilege!  There is such power in that name!

As a Christian, we recognize how spiritually dead this world is, but we do not need to be disappointed or discouraged because we have the hope of future glory!  Adam and Eve were deceived by the serpent bringing upon the whole world the curse of sin.  The perfect creation by God was corrupted and fell into bondage of sin and death.  As believers, we are delivered from this bondage and are promised a new heaven and a new earth.  Until that time of transformation, our job is to go out into the world and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, share the love, and share the hope of eternal life.

Now, it is important that we note something very specific in this verse: to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.  This promise is not for everyone, but can be claimed only by those that love God and are fitting into His plan.  See, what God does is not to satisfy us, or make us happy, but to fulfill His purpose.  Those who are called are those who are drawn by the Spirit and enables us to accept Christ as our LORD and Savior.  Becoming a believer in Jesus Christ gives us a whole new outlook on life.  We no longer care about the material things in life, nor do we worry about or resent our troubles because we place our trust in God, knowing that He is always with us.

For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

Paul explains that Jesus is interceding for us in heaven at all times because it is Satan that continuously accuses us in front of God.  When we are being accused, Jesus comes to our defense and at the right hand of the Father, presents our case.  As a Christian, we have been forgiven for our sins: past, present, and future.  There is nothing that Satan can accuse us of that Jesus can’t combat with the truth.

God’s love for us is to strong, there is no one or any thing that could ever separate us from His love.  No matter whether we are in good times or difficult times of struggle, His love is ever present.  During times of trouble, do not pull away from God, but turn to Him and learn to lean on Him, accepting His love, deepening the relationship that you have with Him.

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Paul continues to impress in his words that it is impossible for believers to be separated from God’s love.  Even when we are faced with the principalities and powers (evil forces in the universe), we have God’s love that will protect us from such forces.

God is above all, so His desire to redeem believers can never be aggravated by anything or anyone.  He is greater than the enemy, and His purpose will be fulfilled according to His plan.  It’s a wonderful feeling to rest in the knowledge that we, as believers, are part of that plan.  We are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time [1 Peter 1:51 Peter 1:5
