Study of Romans, Chapter 7 No longer Bound To The Law

law

With the law’s inability to provide salvation, we needed a Savior, Jesus Christ.  He died on the cross for our sins, and provided the necessary sacrifice that was need for our Salvation.  It is impossible to obtain salvation by obeying the law.  Only Jesus Christ can set us free from sin and death.

Romans 7:1-3Romans 7:1-3
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

7 1 Know ye not, brethren, how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? 2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

1 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion [authority] over a man as long as he liveth?

2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed [released] from the law of her husband.

3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress:  but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

Paul is explaining to those who know the law that the law only applies to those who are alive.  He uses the marriage of a woman and man as an illustration.  If the man should die, then the woman is released from the law and may marry again.  But, if she were to do so and her husband was still alive, she would be committing adultery, according to the law.

As a believer, we have died with Christ, and in doing so we are no longer bound under Mosaic Law, or the Law of Moses [Romans 6:14Romans 6:14

A believer’s identification with the death of Christ frees him from the bondage of the law, and allows him to be joined with Christ to bear fruit unto God.  This simply means that we died to the power of the law, and when we are united with Christ who rose from the dead, we are able to produce good deeds for God.

The law dictated the flesh.  As a believer, we are no longer living in the flesh, but in the Spirit.  Our old self is dead and we have become a new creature, a new being, in Christ.  A unbeliever depends on his own self-determination as his source of power, and his life centers around self-gratification; pleasing yourself.  A believer depends on God for all of his needs and wants.  Their outlook on life and the world begins to change when they accept Christ.  The material things that seemed to be so important as a unbeliever no longer hold us captive.  As we begin to learn God’s character and His expectations for us, we personally change; our attitude towards life changes.

As long as we remain in the flesh, or an unbeliever, we cannot possibly please God.  What we follow in our life is what will be a god to us; we will do whatever we have to do to fulfill whatever it is we are following, whether it be money, power, etc.  No matter how much we do, or how good we are, we cannot please God.  That is not what God wants from us.  He wants a long lasting relationship with us.  One that is built on faith, trust, and love.  One in which we openly accept Jesus Christ as our LORD and Savior, and we openly confess our sins before Him.  Only then, can we please God as we were intended to do.

At the time that we accept Jesus Christ as our LORD and Savior, we are released from the law.  We are dead to it and are no longer bound by its power.  We can now serve God in the new way of living in the Spirit instead of the old way of trying to uphold obedience to the law.

Paul asks if the law is sinful with an emphatic NO!  It is the law that shows us our sin.  The law is not evil or sinful, but one of its purposes is to reveal sin to us.  It brings to life the sin within us and makes us aware of our sin.  If there had been no law, sin would not have power over us; we would not be aware that our thoughts and actions were sinful.

Paul continues to explain that at one time in his life, he was alive but was living a life of self-satisfaction, not recognizing the demands of the law.  But once Paul gained an understanding of the law, he came to realize that he had been accused, found guilty, and marked for death by sin.  He had been confronted with his sin.  His life had been similar to the Pharisees, who lived totally unaware of what the law truly meant.

If there were no laws, or rules, how would we ever know that what we do is wrong?  How would we know that certain behaviors, or actions were not allowed?  God’s Law makes us realize that we are sinners, and that sin is dangerous to our lives.  Where we live, we have quite a few bridges.  During winter weather, ice forms on those bridges before anywhere else.  There are signs displayed before the bridge that tells us that there may be ice on that part of the road.  It is a warning to all who travel across the bridge during bad weather.  If we don’t see the sign, or disregard it, and continue to drive across the bridge wrecking our vehicle, who’s fault is it?  Is it the fault of the sign?  The fault of the road? The fault of the ice?  The Law is similar to the sign:  it is important and necessary, but it doesn’t get rid of the ice.  So is the Law.

Sin deceives us all by making something look good to us simply because God says it is wrong [Genesis 3].  We are tested (refined) on a daily basis by temptations in our life.  We must look at this law in a broader spectrum, taking into consideration the light of God’s grace and mercy.  Let’s take for example a parent that lays down ground rules for their child.  As the child grows, they make mistakes and hopefully learn that the rules that are in place are there for their protection.  At some point in their life, they come to realize that the rules, or laws, their parents placed on them were for their own good; they were there to protect them.  It is no different with God. When we focus on His great love for us, and see the blessings that He gives us day in and day out, we begin to realize that the limits that are placed upon us, or rules, are for our own good.  God only guides us away from those actions and attitudes that will ultimately hurt us.

We all want to naturally do what is right, but we keep finding ourselves doing what we hate, and we can’t understand why we do this.  And if we know that what we are doing is wrong, then we are agreeing that the law is good.

Throughout this chapter, Paul reveals lessons that he learned when he tried to deal with his own sinful ways.  (1)   He learned that knowledge was not the answer to his problems.  As long as he wasn’t aware of the law and its demands, he felt ‘fine’, but when he learned of the truth of the law he came to realize that he was doomed to death.  The realization and knowledge of the law didn’t save him from sin and death.  (2)  When we struggle each day in our own strength and understanding, without God’s grace and mercy, we will never be successful.  We will continue to do things that we know are not right, even though we are aware that it is sin.  (3)  Just because we become a Christian does not mean that sin and temptation is removed from our life.  It isn’t, and how we respond to sin and temptation reveals our faith in God.

How many times have you heard someone say “The devil made me do it” and then laugh about their action? It’s amazing that we have bumper stickers, t-shirts, just about anything with that saying on it.  But, there is nothing funny about it.  Folks, this is a serious matter, and we must begin to take sin as serious as God takes it!  We are aware that what we have done is wrong, but we make an excuse and hang the responsibility on the devil.  Do not be fooled, we will all be held accountable for the things we have done in our lifetime.  As a Christian, we are not capable, nor have the spiritual strength, to conquer Satan without Jesus by our side.

Paul goes on to say that even though he discovered the law and he wants to do what is right, he inevitably does wrong.  He loves the law, but refers to it as ‘after the inward man’, which is our deepest recesses of ourselves.  This makes it impossible for the believer to keep the law;

The part of us within that hangs on to the old self; our old, selfish way of living, is our vulnerability to sin.  Paul is showing us how this struggle is common to all believers.  As a believer, we mature more and more each day in our faith, belief, and knowledge in the Lord.  The more we mature, the more we recognize sin for what it is, and take the steps to stay away from falling into daily temptations.

Even Christians can feel defeated in their life.  Paul is telling his listeners that Jesus Christ is the  One who saved him from himself and sin.  When we are feeling down and out, we should always remember back to the day we gave our life to Jesus Christ, and never forget that He gave His life on the cross to free us from sin and death.  Just this knowledge is power in itself!

When Jesus first came to us in the flesh, in a human body, he introduced His Kingdom to us through His words, but His Kingdom will not be completed until His Second Coming.  It will be at that time that we will see the full power of Jesus Christ, but not until then.  Even so, Paul is giving a message of hope to all:  we can know that we have victory in Jesus Christ, our LORD and Savior, and still feel defeated every so often.
