sin

Paul shows us in this chapter that as a believer in Jesus Christ, we are freed from sin.  The next three chapters cover sanctification in the life of a Christian.

1 What shall we say then?  Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

2 God forbid.  How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Paul opens this chapter by asking a question, and then answering it with a resounding ‘no’.  If, as a Christian, we know that our sins are forgiven and that we are covered by God’s grace, should we continue to sin just to give God more to forgive?  Absolutely not!  This would be nothing more that blatantly taking advantage of God’s grace and mercy!

If we, or someone we know, entertains ‘we can do anything we want because we know we are forgiven for our sins’ kind of attitude, then do we truly understand the seriousness of sin?  Imagine how dreadful sin must be to God that He needed to send His Son, Jesus Christ, to die in such a horrible manner just so we could be forgiven.  This line of thinking is unthinkable to Paul, and should be to us as well.

In Paul’s day, Christians completely immersed in water was the usual form of Baptism.  In our Salvation, we become dead to sin and are joined with Christ.  Through Baptism, we profess our Salvation.  When we are immersed in the water, it symbolizes the death and burial of our old life.  When we arise out of the water, it symbolizes our new life with Jesus Christ.

Our old life of sin is dead and buried with Christ in Baptism, and being raised with Christ by the Power of God, we can now live a new life.  Knowing that our old life is gone, we now have a strong motivating factor to resist sin:  we are in a new life with Christ.

In our world today, there are many views on Baptism.  The word Baptism comes from a verb meaning ‘to immerse’or ‘to identify with’.  When we accept Christ as our LORD and Savior, we are spiritually baptized into a unity with Christ.  As a new believer, we identify with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection.  Baptism by water is our testimony of our faith in God and our acceptance of His Son, Jesus Christ as our Savior to others; the public.  We are not ashamed of our conversion; our Salvation in Christ, and profess it to the world.

When the old is dead to us, it allows us to change our moral and ethical behavior by letting Christ live within us.  By allowing this transformation, we allow Christ to shape us into the child of God that we are intended to be.  We all play a part in God’s plan, and when we live as a new creature in Christ, we take on an active role in God’s plan.

We must always guard against sin in our life, and must learn self-control.  Our life as a Christian is an ever-ending process of learning and obeying.  We should never just become complacent and drift along in life.  It should bring us great joy to grow in Christ and become more like Him each day.  This takes a conscious effort on our part, making a daily decision to remove anything that breeds sinful desires in our life.  We must learn to draw on the power of the Holy Spirit.

Just because we are no longer under the power of sin, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist in our life.  Sin will present its ugly face every chance it gets, but when we remember our new relationship with Christ, we can make a conscious decision to rebuke sin.  When we are tempted to go back to the old life and that way of living, we can remind ourselves that the old man [Romans 6:6Romans 6:6

We are no longer ruled by Satan, and should never allow ourselves to be used as an instrument in promoting or extending his kingdom here on earth.  We must keep on our toes, so to speak, always realizing the Spiritual Warfare that is constantly going on around us.  It is important that we keep our eyes open at all times; paying great attention.

Paul makes it very clear to his listeners that just because we are now under God’s grace and no longer under the law, that we are not to disregard the Ten Commandments.

Whatever we choose to obey in life becomes our master.  We become a slave of that entity, whether it be money, a job, a big beautiful house, etc.  When we choose to follow a sinful nature, death is the consequence. Or, we can choose to follow God which leads to righteous living and results in a heavenly eternity.

19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh:  for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.

20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.

21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed?  for the end of those things is death.

22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

embarrassment

We all have a story to tell, one of things we may have done in our past that we are not very proud of.  Those memories of our past indiscretions should be a great motivator to continue living a life of obedience and godly living.  If you stop for a moment to look around at the world, sin is becoming more and more prevalent in people’s lives.  Sin is taking over this world, just as God said it would.  For years people have lived complacently, sort of sitting on a fence, trying to stay neutral.  There is no neutral ground with God:  you are either with Him, or against Him.  Being a Christian doesn’t mean you won’t ever commit a sin, but means that you are no longer a slave to sin.  You are no longer held captive by sin.  Once you have accepted Christ as your LORD and Savior, you now belong to God.  Jesus paid the ultimate price for you with His death.

death

When the Bible speaks of death being the result of sin, it is not referring to natural death.  We all know that everyone will eventually die.  When the Bible talks about eternal life for those who believe and accept Jesus Christ as their LORD and Savior, it is talking about life after natural death.  Let’s take a look at the Book of Revelation, where it explains everything pretty clearly.

Revelation 20:12-15Revelation 20:12-15
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. hell: or, the grave 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire.  This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:8Revelation 21:8
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Those who continue to live in sin and reject the gift of  salvation from God will experience the second death.  By rejecting God’s gift, they are exchanging an eternal life with God for an eternity in the lake of fire.

23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

This verse is quite obvious, and couldn’t be more plain in its text or content.  We are free to choose between two masters, God or Satan, but we cannot alter the consequences of our choice.  If you make the decision to follow Satan, or sin, then your cost for that life is death.  If you make the decision to follow God, your cost will be eternal life.

Let me state once again:  there is no middle ground between God and Satan; remaining neutral is not an option.  What choice are your making for your life?
