Study of Romans, Chapter 5 Faith Brings Joy

joy

Joy, the feeling of great pleasure and happiness; a feeling of delight, bliss, jubilation, gladness, rejoicing, triumph, exhilaration, and exuberance.  Through our faith in God, we receive great joy.

Romans 5:1-2Romans 5:1-2

In Chapter 4, Paul proved that circumcision and following the law was nothing more than an outward profession of a Jew’s faith in God, but was not necessary for salvation as was shown in Abraham’s life.  Paul begins to outline the benefits of our justification, beginning with peace.  This does not necessarily mean that this is a feeling, but indicates that we have been reconciled with God.  We no longer have sin in our life that blocks a personal relationship with God.  This peace is a direct result of Jesus dying on the cross for our sins.

God's grace and mercy

We have been made right in God’s eyes by faith, and have a peace that can only come because of what Jesus Christ has done for us.  Because we have faith in Jesus Christ, we are brought into this place of peace which we do not deserve; it is a privilege.  We then rejoice, or have joy, in the hope of sharing God’s glory.  Let this soak in your mind:  we have access to God’s glory and grace at all times.  Wow!  That is a powerful thought!

Romans 5:3-5Romans 5:3-5

When we stop to look at all the facets of being a child of God, it is mind boggling.  In 1 Corinthians 13:131 Corinthians 13:13

, Paul shares with us that as a Christian we possess faith, hope, and charity [love].  We begin our relationship with God based on our faith.  We base our faith in the knowledge that Jesus Christ died for our sins and delivered us from our sins; past, present, and future.  As we begin to read and study God’s Word, we develop hope through the many promises we find in the Bible.  We begin to learn and understand what God has in store for our future as a child of God.  Throughout this process, our heart’s are filled with God’s love and this is when we begin to reach out to others to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Bad things happen to Christians all of the time, but we rejoice in our suffering. This is not because we take it lightly, or enjoy the pain that comes with tragedy, but because we know that God is using these times in our life to build and strengthen our character.  Through trials in our life, we develop patience which in turn, develops character.  As our character becomes stronger, we rely deeper on God which brings hope to our life.

When we learn to trust God with all of our heart, we become confident in our future with God.  When we face daily issues or problems, don’t become frustrated or discouraged.  Be thankful to God and accept the opportunity He is giving you to grow and become stronger.  The process of growth in God will never lead to disappointment.  We know that God loves us unconditionally because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

Jesus Christ was sent by God at the exact moment in time that was necessary for us.  Yes, God controls history and everything that happens.  He is our Creator of all.  Christ had to come as the prophets said He would, to die for our sins because we are unable to save ourselves.  We are helpless in ourselves and need someone to help us; a Savior.

Jesus

Wow!  Jesus died for not only my sins, and your sins, but for the sins of the whole world!  His blood covers every single person on this earth if they are willing to accept Him as their LORD and Savior!  I want you to ask yourself this question:  is there anyone that you would be willing to give your life for?  If you answered yes, it is probably because of a deep love you have for that individual.  Can you even begin to imagine how much God loves us to send His Son for us, when we were still sinners; we were dirty, filthy.  We definitely don’t deserve what God has done for us in our life.  Keeping this in mind, there are still many that their pride gets in the way of accepting Jesus into their hearts.  They are deceived into believing that they are just fine the way they are and don’t need help, they don’t need a Savior.  They are not willing to humble themselves and take a long, deep look into their hearts to see the sin in their life.

Jesus died for our sins

God cannot cast His eyes upon sin, nor will He be associated with it in any way.  All sin deserves punishment, and keeps us separated from God; it makes us His enemy because sin is of Satan, not God.  God sent Jesus to absorb all of our sin, every last bit of it!  He carried that sin on His back to Calvary, and took our punishment:  death, a price for our sins that we should have paid!  How very much He must love us; unmeasurable, indescribeable, and uncomrephensible!  We can have joy in our relationship with our Lord!  We can rejoice, because through Jesus Christ, we are no longer an enemy of God!

The one man Paul was speaking of was Adam, who was representative of all humanity.  When Adam defied God, sin became a part of us by entering into the world and death also came upon us.  The first sin committed keeps us from ever being able to live a life of perfect righteousness and obedience.  It is only through Jesus Christ that we are given this privilege.

Sin existed long before the law did, but it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break, although people still died during the time between Adam and Moses.  It is important to understand that as keeping the law does not grant us Salvation, breaking the law does not bring upon death.  Death is a result of sin, not of the law.  The law is in place to show us our sin and puts the responsibility on our shoulders.  God created us in His image, and we need something to make us aware of our sin so that we can confess and ask for forgiveness.

 temptation

There are those who do not feel that we should be held guilty for, or be judged for the sin that Adam committed so long ago.  Rationally speaking, this seems appropriate in our own understanding….until we consider the sin that we, ourselves, commit each and every day.  We    are   sinners.  Recognizing and admitting this fact is only the first step towards receiving God’s mercy.

Adam’s sin condemned us all to spiritual and physical death, but through the blood of Jesus Christ, who conquered death and the grave, we are promised eternal life.  When we are born we are a descendant of Adam and are born with the tendency to sin and as a result, God’s judgment.  But, because of Jesus, we can trade judgment for forgiveness.  Jesus gives us the opportunity to be born again into God’s family.

Without Jesus Christ and His sacrifice, we could not even begin to be a part of this spiritual family.  Which family do you want to be a part of?  Do you remain living a life of sin, following the line of Adam?  Or have you accepted Christ as your LORD and Savior, providing you the power to overcome sin and death, and bask in the promise of eternal life with God?

And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

We have the law in place to make us knowledgeable, or convict us of sin.  It makes us aware of our transgressions, even as overwhelming as it may be.  Paul shows that anyone who is seeking restoration, forgiveness and justification can easily find it in Jesus Christ.  Where sin and death were once at the top of the page and we had no way of salvation through the law, Christ’s death and resurrection gave us the gift of God’s grace and righteousness, providing us eternal life with God.
