7 abominations of the heart

I am currently reading a book that made reference to the seven abominations of the heart.   Our God is a loving, wonderful, generous, forgiving God.  It’s difficult to comprehend that there are specific actions, thoughts, speech, or influence on others that God despises in us, but there are.

These are the Seven Abominations of the Heart.

Proverbs 6:16-19Proverbs 6:16-19
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: unto...: Heb. of his soul 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, A proud...: Heb. Haughty eyes 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

There are six things the Lord hates – no, seven things he detests:

haughty eyes,

a lying tongue,

hands that kill the innocent,

a heart that plots evil,

feet that race to do wrong,

a false witness who pours out lies,

a person who sows discord in a family.

Haughty eyes, or pride, is at the top of the list.  Our pride leads us into disobedience, causing us to turn away from God.

In Proverbs 8:13Proverbs 8:13
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

, God clearly informs us of his hatred of pride and arrogance, corruption and perverse speech.  Instead of pride, God expects us to humble ourselves in His light, to acknowledge ourselves as sinners, and to control what we allow to come out of our mouths.  God addresses pride throughout the Bible, and each verse looks upon pride as a negative attribute.

God is a God of truth!  There is no room for lies.

John 14:6John 14:6
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth and the life.  No one can come to the Father except through me.

In Colossians 1:5Colossians 1:5
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

, God’s word is referred to as the ‘truth of the Good News’

A hand that kills the innocent, no matter what the situation, is also an abomination to God.  God clearly gave us this in His commandments “Thou  shalt not kill”  Exodus 20:13Exodus 20:13
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

13 Thou shalt not kill.

seven abominations of the heart

Our hearts are our biggest source of evil.   In Mark 7:20-23Mark 7:20-23
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: covetousness...: Gr. covetousnesses, wickednesses 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

And then He added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you.  For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride and foolishness.  All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”  For this very reason, we need to become knowledgeable of God’s word, and fill our hearts with love.

Romans 3:23Romans 3:23
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

shares that we are all sinners.  All of us sin multiple times each day, that goes without saying.  But a sinner who loves his life and has no desire to follow Christ will continue to sin; continue to live in evil.  2 Timothy 2:192 Timothy 2:19
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. sure: or, steady

is very clear in telling us that when we belong to the Lord, we must turn away from evil.

Someone who is a false witness is someone who slanders, or says something that is not true, about someone else.  Exodus 20:16Exodus 20:16
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.   We are not to say anything about anyone else that would bring any source of harm to them.

Lastly, we must not cause division among our brothers or sisters in our family of Christ.

Romans 16:17-20Romans 16:17-20
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. 19 For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil. simple: or, harmless 20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. bruise: or, tread

17 And now I make one more appeal, my dear brothers and sisters.  Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught.  Stay away from them.  18 Such people are not serving Christ our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests.  By smooth talk and glowing words they deceive innocent people.  19  But everyone knows that you are obedient to the Lord.  This makes me very happy.  I want you to be wise in doing right and to stay innocent of an wrong.  20  The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.  May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
