How Difficult Is It To Forgive?

Forgiveness

How difficult is it to forgive?  Extremely difficult, if you are trying to do it without God’s help.  You may even find yourself struggling as you pray for God’s help and ask for His strength.  You have been wronged by someone and the pain is a constant reminder of what was done to you.  Wrongs done to someone can range from something as small as ‘name-calling’, all the way up to unthinkable physical and/or sexual abuse.  Every wrong-doing causes someone to experience pain…deep pain.

Many struggle with forgiveness every day.  Our self wants the person who hurt us to suffer the same way we did.  I believe this is a very normal response by anyone.  We want them to realize how badly they hurt us, when in truth, it probably doesn’t even cross their mind.  They have inflicted damage  and move on, never giving it a second thought.  We are the ones who are left with the scars; the pain; and the task of forgiving them.   I believe that God understands how we are feeling.

As I begin to pray and read the scripture, I find that Jesus tells us that we need to have faith, and must forgive.

Mark 11:22-25Mark 11:22-25
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. Have...: or, Have the faith of God 23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. 24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. 25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

Then, I begin to reflect on a time that most would have found the most difficult time of any to find forgiveness in our hearts: when Jesus was crucified.  I try to imagine the pain that Jesus endured during those hours, which of course, is impossible. How could I even compare my pain to His?  He was the ultimate sacrifice for our sins and yet, a midst His pain, He found it in His heart to ask His Father to forgive those who had inflicted this pain on Him.  How arrogant of me to even think that my pain is so bad that I can’t forgive the one who caused it!

forgiveness

With a strong faith, and fervent prayer, we can eventually come to a place of forgiveness for those who wrong us in this life.

Great post and topic. Whenever the topic of forgiveness come up I think of these words by Mother Teresa “In the end it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway”. And based on this I believe that the only one I need to forgive is myself. I have used this philosophy many times in recent years and I am happier for it. I wrote a post on this a while ago that expands on my theory.

Forgiveness is the key which unlocks our hearts and our souls, and which, ultimately, frees us. Is it easy? No! Do we want to do it? No! But, it is what our Lord and Savior, Jesus, commanded that we do. And, in doing so, we can truly live for Him and bring His kingdom just this much more closer to earth.
May we all be conduits, gratefully and willingly, of forgiveness!
    Blessings always, Mary!

Oh Martha, how very true! It is one of the hardest things and I dread it sometimes. But, our King commands it, therefore I will do it. He never said that it would be easy though LOL. Thanks for coming by Martha. Hope you are having a blessed weekend!

Don't be shy! We would love to hear from you!
